Preparing for the worst

How do you prepare for the worst when it can happen to you anywhere, even on the evening commute. The bridge tragedy in the news is a reminder that it is not paranoia to prepare for anything and everything. You just never know. I won’t go into dramatics about the event gut here is just a short and vital treatment to go over in your head as when it happens there is no time to stop and think things through in long form.

If you find yourself in a car that’s underwater, it’s crucial to stay calm. Once the car is submerged, don’t waste time calling for help until you’re out of the car—escape should be your priority. Undo your seat belt, open a window for exit—breaking a window if necessary. If the windows won’t open, wait for the pressure to equalize, then open the door and swim out. Always try to escape through the window as soon as possible. Remember, children first, then the adults.

Again here it is in step by step format:

If your car is submerged in water, survival depends on quick and decisive action:

  1. Stay Calm: Panic uses oxygen and clouds judgement.
  2. Unfasten Seatbelt: Do this first before attempting to open windows or doors.
  3. Open Windows: If the car is not yet fully submerged, try to lower the windows as quickly as possible. Electric windows may still function for a while.
  4. Break a Window: If the windows won’t open, use a car escape tool or a heavy object to break one. Aim for a side window, not the windshield.
  5. Escape Through the Window: Exit as soon as the window is open or broken. Take a deep breath and swim out.
  6. Children First: If there are children in the car, push them out the window first.
  7. Do Not Wait to Escape: Do not wait for the car to fill with water hoping the pressure will equalize. It is very difficult to open the door until the car is completely filled, and it might be too late by then.

After escaping the car, surface as quickly as possible and seek immediate help.
